A Neapolitan bear

Hi there,
NZ has just had it's Queen's Birthday weekend so I got a bit of card-making done (yay) and for the first time in ages I was able to come-up-with, and execute, something for the current Less is More challenge before the cut off time.

The challenge is  Neapolitan (so chocolate, strawberry & vanilla, or, in colours - brown, pink & cream). Such a fun challenge - we used to sometimes have tubs of Neapolitan ice cream when I was a kid.

I even managed to base mine on a craft card blank. Craft card is something I have had no great success with in the past - but it works ok with this card.

The little bear is from a Craft Stamper magazine and I coloured her/him with copics. I picked up a border punch in the Queen's Birthday sales and threaded a thin strip of pink card though it. The sentiment is one a from a small Hero Arts set from long ago -  and that was it really ... normally I suspect I overthink these things, but it all fell into place for this little brown bear.

I liked the oval cameo so much that I made another card for my daughter - she's about to start her first varsity exams & we've sent her a small fun parcel (hopefully she's too busy studying to read this blog for a couple of days). 

She's keen on cats. The card base is navy but it's hard to tell in the photo. Anyway he was fun to colour and put together and will hopefully make her smile.

Anyway the cat is just for fun and I will enter the Neapolitan bear into the current Less is More challenge.

Birthday card

We've had a long weekend here with very wintry weather, but that hasn't stopped us getting out and about, and also it's given me time to make cards.

The Muse challenge this week was to pick one of Ardyth's cards and use it as your muse ... took me a long time to narrow down the choice because there were so many great cards to choose from.

Finally I chose this card from a Muse challenge back in January.  I loved the clean lines and sharpness of the circle and dots. And the bold, red flower and green leaves contrasting with the black and white.


I had so many ideas for how I was going to interpret it, but the end result landed quite far from where I started.

I masked a circle, stamped musical notes and added perfect pearls. Then I popped it on a scalloped circle and coloured a couple of honeysuckle flowers from an old Chocolate Baroque set. I used foam tape to lift the top flower slightly. The sentiment is from another old Chocolate Baroque set.

When I look at both cards together I can see where mine got its looks from 😊

It's the end of our weekend now - Monday evening - and I hope to finish another couple of cards I have started. I may even manage 2 blog posts in one week rather than my once every couple of weeks efforts of late.
So I'll load this up to the Muse challenge & go & cook dinner.

Sending smiles

Hi All,
It's been a couple of weeks since I've blogged. We've had a visitor and things have just been a bit busy round here.
Also, it is now winter ... there was snow on the hills on Saturday morning. It's gone for now, but I know it will be back again.


This week's Muse challenge really appealed to me. Jenni's card is really clean and simple. I love the shadows created by her white on white  that contrast with her simple and colourful string of flowers and little hearts.

I kept Jenni's flower theme, the colours she's used and the white on white. I used an old Craft Stamper stamp  that has little heart shaped leaves and had fun colouring it with my copics. I left it on the table, uncut last night & had a bit more inspiration in the early hours. I decided to find my old roller-ball embossing tool and try doing straight lines using the runner on my paper trimmer.

Sometimes I have ideas in the night that turn out to be totally impractical in the cold light of day so I was fully prepared to start again after the failure of my experiment ... but it didn't fail ... don't know why I didn't think to try this years ago.

So, anyway, my flowers were framed by a subtle, embossed line and popped onto a white card blank with 3D tape ... then I decided to add a touch of sparkle with a teeny spot of stickles on each of the stamen. Again I was worried that I would stuff it up, but it looks nice with just a little sparkle, so I'm pleased and relieved.

I will add this to the Muse challenge this week, and the AAA blog where the challenge is to use embossing.  
Then I'm off to light the wood burner 😊

Always flowers

A huge thank you to everyone who voted for my card in last weeks Muse challenge.
It's a first for me to have a card selected in a challenge and I have been buzzing all week. I could enter more card challenges I guess - but I don't seem to get that organised.

Anyway, moving on. I loved the colours in Anita's card for this week's Muse challenge and how they contrasted so well with the white. I thought she must have embossed it, but when I read her post, it turns out she'd used a stencil ....

I have some stencils, bought in a rush of enthusiasm at seeing the results of others using them - but I've had little real success with them. I decided to give it another go.

So my inspiration from Anita's awesome card was firstly the colours, then the stencil, and also how she had  placed the stencil so the image was off-centre and not fully on the card.

This is what I finally came up with (after 2 earlier cards). I used a stencil I've had for years ... first card I've made with it 😊 - I used distress inks, and the sentiment is from a Jofy stamp set.
When I lifted the stencil I thought there was too much white & it looked wrong so I blended the inks on the white areas and into the stencilling a bit which softened the edges of the stencilling more.

I originally made a tall card but when I went to photograph it & do my blog post this morning I thought it would be better sideways.
So here's my original. Plus there's another where I stamped the sentiment on uppy-downy rather than sideways .... so I have a trio of flowery cards and heaps more practice using stencils.

This afternoon I'm off to a crafting session making a mini album with a masculine theme so hopefully I'll learn lots of new techniques and get lots of ideas for future crafty things.

Card for Mum

Gosh - every week I think I should get organised and do a few more card challenges ... but somehow the week gets away from me and I'm lucky if I even get a card in for the Muse challenge.

This week's Muse challenge is a super card from Kay Miller.

I played around with a few ideas & inked up some die cut flowers.
I started putting it all together and then left an inky thumb print on my card ... a few words were said and I stomped off to do some housework instead.

Turns out I don't have much stamina for housework so I came back to my card and tried again and this is what I finished with.

It's slightly different from my original plan (but isn't that often the case) and I like it much better. It's Mother's day here next Sunday so I will post this to my mum in a few days time.

It looks quite different from Kay's original, but I took my influences from her spray of flowers and the geometry of her background. The background stamp is an old Kaisercraft one I've had for a few years & I'm thinking I must use it more :-)

Blues and White

Well - I checked the time difference from here & England & worked out I could just squeeze this card in before the deadline.

So I'm entering it in Muse Challenge 212 where Jenni has given us a deceptively simple card to muse on.

After some thinking that tailed off rather ineffectually I remembered an old Chocolate Baroque background stamp that I've hardly used. I liked it but haven't been comfortable with background stamps really.
Anyway I found some shiny-ish white card in my stash, but decided to white emboss rather than clear emboss then I used a couple of distress inks over it. I'm really pleased with the effect & want to keep playing with it. The distress inks perform quite differently on shiny card

So the parts of Jenni's original card I've taken inspiration from are the format, and the blue & white colours - though I'm calling the soft purple blue in this case.

So - thank you Jenni & Muse for pushing me out of my comfort zone.

Thank You Card

I love Easter weekend.
It's such a good time to get into some craft and card making -  though once again my intentions, and the reality didn't quite gel ...
Still, I have managed to complete a card for this week's Muse challenge. Tracey's card is light, summery, bouncy and fun.
My husband saw it and reminded me of my first ever Jofy stamp set (n.9), the flowers in it are all circles.
I wanted to keep my coloured spaces light and open like Tracey's so I used chalks for the first time in ages. I kept to the same colours and added some fine glitter to the flowers for a touch of sparkle.
I searched through my whole stash of coloured card (plain & patterned) to frame my finished picture before mounting it on the card.
This took a while and was a great opportunity to remind myself what I had (lots of ideas for later), but in the end I decided it just looked fine on the tall blue card base ... I didn't even ink the edges.

Well - the glitter doesn't show up much- but I know it's there 😊.
It's a nice card but seems like very little to show for the best part of Easter weekend .... there was an earlier card attempt & I still like the ideas in it so will work on that one again later + I have been attempting a triptych, slowly ... and have made some progress but am nowhere near complete.
I've wanted to attempt one for ages to expand from card making (which I love) into other forms of paper crafty-ness.
The best news is there is still one day of the Easter break left ... and a whole chocolate bunny 😊

Blue card

Hi there,
I seem to have lost a week last week, but I checked out the Muse blog earlier this week and thought about SonjaK's lovely card for Muse challenge 209.



I've had very little success with using craft card, but am often impressed by how others use it so well in their creations. My craft card 'creations' always look like brown cardboard - I have yet to master the art of using it to create an earthy, rustic feel.

However I love blue flowers.  I also love the combination of blue and orange that Sonja has included on her card, and how her hydrangea is framed by the oval even though it's outside the frame.

My daughter gave me some Faber-Castell paper crafter crayons for my birthday last year, not something I would have thought to buy for myself, but I love them. I have been playing around with using them as a resist with distress inks. and this is what I've done with my card.  I used a Jofy stamp and coloured it with oranges, yellows and greens.

Instead of using the blending tool I just splodged some tumbled glass, picket fence & shaded lilac on my craft sheet, flicked on some water & smeared them round with my finger & then pressed my crayoned flower picture into it.

I brushed a little perfect pearls over when the ink was slightly dryer (more noticeable on the card than the photo).

It was at this point that I realised my flower stem created an ovalish curve so I decided to cut it and see what happened. The closest I could get (comfortably) to craft was this pattered paper from my stash adding the twine looked right - and then I realised it sort of mirrored the strip of parchment on Sonja's card. 

I've really enjoyed this challenge - it's given me the chance to play more with a technique I enjoy and also experimenting further ... and finishing with a nice card just waiting for the right occasion :-)

I'm thinking some photography classes would be useful ... I took four photos to get this one & it's still a bit gloomy towards the top.

Easter at Muse

Well - I'm writing my 2nd week's blog post. I was hoping to do more this week, but it's been a busy one ... funny how life gets in the way of crafting :-)
Anyway, I was a bit stumped by the Muse inspiration card this week - and that's absolutely no reflection of Tracey's colourful, fun card ... it's just that in New Zealand Easter is an Autumn event rather than spring. So I took Easter/Autumn as my inspiration. I used similar colours, but more muted to make a more Autumnal image and the woven strips are my nod to the stripes and the woven basket of Tracey's card.

I picked soft pink, green, blue  & mustard/brown papers - cut narrow strips, wove them together & placed them on a white background stamped with a few dots of marmalade and wild honey distress inks. The leaves are from a Bo Bunny set I've had for a while. I've just held them in place with a little double-sided tape in the centre to give a bit more of a 3D feel. I mounted this on Chocolate brown card -chocolate for Easter :-) - and popped it on a soft pink card blank.
Weaving the strips was more of a challenge than I expected , but I'm happy with how they turned out. I think I'll play a bit more with this formula.

Muse flowers

Hi there,
I'm typing here & feeling a little embarrassed. I started this blog with good intentions a few years ago & haven't written any posts for almost 2 years now.

... but I've kept on making cards & playing with ink, stamps, paper, paints, crayons ... and I've kept checking card and craft challenge blogs.  I discovered the Muse blog in the weekend and decided to give it a go.

I love the idea of being able to take the inspiration I choose from a muse card and Anita Bowden's strong, bright card for challenge #206 led me to this.

I took the colours and geometric shapes of Anita's card and combined them with an old Craft Stamper stamp I've had for a few years now.

I was going to use a white card blank to frame it ... but my family voted for the blue, and it does make the pink and orange pop.

I loved the pink orange & black colour combination and plan to experiment with it further.

Now I need to get it loaded before the deadline :-)

Last minute card

Hi all,
This is a bit of a rushed post.
I wanted to sustain my renewed card-making burst by entering the current Less is More challenge - but it has been a busy week.
I was thinking about this beautiful chocolate baroque stamp that I have only used once & wondered if I could try just using a portion of it for a card.
The current challenge gives a choice of 3 cards to case. I chose Chrissie's mainly because I love the sharpness of the white on white accented by the shadows created round the square & rectangular elements.



I wanted my colours to be bold so it would not look like a wedding card, and I wanted to keep the sentiment simple as well. I used copics to colour her and this is my third attempt, She thinks she'd like a little glitter & sparkle, but I have resisted. I might play with one of my early attempts to see how it would look.

Anyway, I managed to make it onto the challenge with just a few minutes to spare (whew)

One layer animal card

Hi there,
since I have been back crafting and blogging for a week or so now I decided to check out the Less is More challenge for this week..

It is a one layer card challenge and must include an animal. I tend to be attracted to flowers & plant life when I buy stamps, but I have a few animal stamps. One is a giraffe - a sketchy one rather than an African savanna one, and I have used him for baby and small child cards before.

So I masked up a card blank and stamped him, masked him and then used distress inks to create a background, I used the distress inks to stamp a jumbled letter background stamp at the top and bottom.
Then I peeled off all my masking, coloured my  giraffe in with copic makers and added a Happy Birthday.

It all sounds quite straightforward when written like that, but I have a whole spare card that became a giant experiment
... things went well 'til I stamped my top letters upside down (I 'm sure they were the right way up when I inked them).
Then I got them the right way up for the bottom of the card, but had wiped the wrong side so there was a sharp, clear line of letters ending ... rather than fading into the green as I had intended.
Also, I discovered the a post-it note mask does not always prevent a little distress ink getting onto the card when you stamp.
 ... And finally I discovered I had no birthday sentiment that would fit neatly onto the blank part of my card. My test card is covered in attempts to make 'happy birthday, work. I finally masked each word so I could ink and stamp one below the other.

Still - I got there in the end, and I have a cute giraffe bookmark as well :-)

More with the masterboard

I had an idea for a card while I was at work yesterday and we had a friend round to dinner last night so I had to save it for today ....

I cut 4 small squares from the masterboard I made for my previous card. I clipped two opposing corners with my widest corner punch from each of them, inked the edges with vintage photo and then spent ages looking for the right colour to mount them. There is paper scattered all over the table as I experimented with purples, yellows, creams, white, black and and craft card. Black looked impressive, as did the purple, but they also mage the whole effect quite dark, and I also wanted to keep with the colours for the Chocolate Baroque challenge.

 My daughter and I both voted this our favourite combination and I do feel that it leaves my earlier card for dead. Still you have to start somewhere to move any further.

It is lucky it's evening here so I used the flash, which puts all my background mess into darkness.

I will load this up to the Chocolate Baroque challenge blog taking me from never having entered to entering twice in one challenge.

Experimenting

There are so many creative and talented people out there doing amazing things with paint, stamps, inks, paper and anything else that inspires them. I am often daunted by their creativity, and also awed by their willingness to share techniques and ideas just for the love of creating. So thank you everyone for sharing your images and ideas so we can all benefit.

I have been watching the Chocolate Baroque challenge blog since shortly after it started and in my (longish) phase of procrastination I have started any number of  pieces with the intention of entering the challenge. This week I have finally finished something that I am quite pleased with - and better still - I can see where I would like to take it further.

I really love the colours for challenge 8 and I like that you are just given the colours, what you do with them is up to you ... you don't even have to use Chocolate Baroque stamps.  As it happens I have a little weakness for their stamps and have a few in my collection, though there is room for more :-)

I started with a painted background similar to my previous card but I stayed with just adding stamped images from the punky flowers set, and script from the paisley elephants set. Next I made a sort-of master board using the punky flowers stamps, colouring them with copic markers. I took a strip of this, added some gold embossing and then clear embossed it twice to give it a good glossy coat and mounted it on a piece of dark purple paper

I love how the colours have worked together and am glad I have finally completed a card for the challenge.
now I just need to add it to the site and get back to crafting.

Eleanor's Birthday card

Well here I am slinking back to my blog, looking shamefaced, but also pleased to have something I want to show off on the 'fridge door'.

It was my daughter's birthday a few weeks ago and just before and I was thinking what sort of card I could make for a beautiful, savvy, and (her word) sassy 16 year old.
I had just picked up the January Craft Stamper (we get ours a month later here) with the corset free stamp, and inside was an article titled 'soul Stamping'. I really liked how the author had built up her layers of paint, stamps and paper to create her art journal cover, and how she had used the same technique for a card.

I decided to experiment with her technique and to incorporate the corset stamp ... only I wanted something a bit more edgy than just the corset so I added the set of wings that were an earlier Craft Stamper free stamp to give it more of a steampunk feel. This is what I came up with...

I was pretty chuffed with how the technique worked and how it all came together and, just as importantly, Eleanor liked it. I have continued experimenting using this format. It is really forgiving because you can always paint over something, or stick something on top.

One of the reasons I have not put much on my blog recently is because I often get hung up by the need to 'create' a finished object and I end up with lots of half finished things ... or things not started because I'm not sure where they are going. So, for me, the absolute best thing about the 'Soul stamping' article was that it showed me how to experiment more.

Yay - back at it

It is has been months since my last post and I have just spent part of last week, and the weekend making cards & playing with my stamps. It's been lovely.

I have read blog posts where people talk about losing their Mojo ... I felt like I had lost even more than that for a while. It wasn't just inspiration, but the confidence to actually sit down and create.
I  looked at challenges but didn't feel I had the courage to start things, or see them through. But I still enjoyed checking out entries to challenges and have seen some awesome cards over the last few months.

It's interesting how when one part of your life is out of kilter it effects other parts. Now I have started a new job and made some decisions about parts of my life, I feel so much better about myself and where I'm headed. I don't have the aswers to anything much - but at least I feel like I have some idea of what the questions and issues are.

Possibly the fact that it is winter (Spring supposedly - though you wouldn't know it) here and the family have all had horrible colds (sometimes more than once) has impacted my mood - so maybe the beginning of spring (if only notional) will boost my confidence.

Some Months ago I bought the Mackintosh Windows & Mackintosh Beauty stamps from Chocolate Baroques. They were so beautiful I almost felt unworthy of them amd, apart from a card for my daughter's birthday I have not used them. But my husband really likes these stamps, and it's his birthday this week so I sat down with them.

I can't show his card because he may well read this blog & I want to keep it as a surprise since he made the effort not to peek while I was working on it. Anyway having been envigorated by my success with his card I went on with the same technique and made a card for  his mum's birthday, which is coming up in a couple of months. This is it and I'm really happy with it.

I thought I'd get my crafty ball rolling by entering this in the Simon Says Stamping Wednesday challenge which requests the use of a rubber or clear stamp - no digi stamps & this is definitely a rubber stamp image.
I stamped the rose window stamp from the Mackintosh Windows set & embossed with copper & coloured it in with copic markers. The 'happy birthday, is from another Chocolate baroque set. The pink card has been versamaked with a selection of the single rose stamps & I popped it onto a dark blue card.
I was so chuffed at how this turned out that I went on to 'experiment' with different colous using the mini version of this stamp that came with a Craft Stamper magazine a few months ago ... & I now have my first Christmas card

 I was nicely surprised by the different effect created by using red for the roses. I still need to stamp a sentiment onto it. None of my current ones look quite right, so I guess I will have to have a look for one - but that's ok - I can handle the shopping :-)


The interesting thing about these Mackintosh Windows stamps is that they are so complete they don't need much in the way of extra work. They are definitely the star of anything they are applied to.
It's back to work for me tomorrow morning - but my crafty mess is still on the table and I have lots of ideas to keep me busy - yay

Mothers' Day

It is Mothers' Day in New Zealand this Sunday and I like to make Mum a card - let face it - if anyone appreciates your creativity it's your Mum - especially once you move out of her house and any resulting mess is not her responsibility.

I thought she'd really like the shabby chic card I made a few weeks ago for a challenge (see here), but that had already been nabbed by Eleanor for a friend's birthday card. So I decided I'd do something similar. For the original I copied a Shakespeare sonnet & used a nice font I found.  I was hoping to do the same with a mum-themed poem, but I couldn't find anything on the net that wasn't too cute ... so I decided to write something.

Mum's are complex things - as are our relationships with them - so I thought I'd just write about how it took being an adult and having my own children to appreciate all that she had done for me, and is still doing.
Anyway it sounded ok when I'd finished (though definitely not a poem), however, having written it I couldn't bring myself to tear it into a strip for a card, so I ended up making a bit of a feature of it and building the card around that.

It was another card that used up bits from my stash, so that always makes me feel a virtuous. The little flowers are cut from some vellum & I like the translucence of them.  I was pleased by how willing they were to curve - I thought the vellum would be too inflexible for that.

Now I need to find an envelope to fit it and get it in the post today otherwise it wont make it to Feilding by Saturday's post.
I'm not entering it into any challenges ... except the 'hope Mum likes it' challenge.
Well - enough fun - I'm off to do some housework

One Layer - Flowers

It has been a couple of weeks since my last posting.
I've wanted to craft and have kept an eye on some of the challenges, but somehow other things took my time. I guess it was good that I had so much productive time over Easter.

Yesterday afternoon I checked out the latest challenge at One-Layer Simplicity Challenge and the theme was 'fabulous flowers'. And, yes I am one of those people with a large collection of flower and nature stamps, so I knew I had to give it a go ... besides I should be working on a science paper I'm in the middle of ... so what better time to stop and do some crafting.

I tried to do some masking with a circle but the effect wasn't what I'd hoped (though I have not given up on it yet) and then uncovered a large single flower stamp that I have always liked. My card grew from that - keeping in mind the element of simplicity.

I masked the top edges and inked the stamp petals with a peony red and the stamens with yellow, I don't often ink with two colours on a stamp - but this time it came out better than I'd hoped.

Then I removed the mask and ruled a border round the stamp.  I really like borders - they add a bit of formality to an image.

I coloured my flower with chalks and popped the sentiment in the opposite corner for balance.
This was a reasonably simple card to make ... coming up with the idea is what takes the time.

Anyway I am really happy with it and will enter it into the One-Layer Simplicity challenge.

Still Smiling

Gosh another post in less than 12 hours. I feel so 'on to it'.
I go back to work tomorrow, but I feel like I have had some good crafting time this weekend.

I have another card - this is for the Less is More challenge with the current theme 'Makes me smile'.

I chose this elephant from a Chocolate Baroque set because he has a wicked grin - he looks like he's done something really naughty and hasn't been caught yet. This is the first time I've stamped with him and he has come up so well that I'm grinning too. I coloured him with copic markers at  popped tiny dots of stickles on the red band of his cloth, The sentiment came from the same stamp set.

We have a number of elephant lover's in the family so it will easy to find a home for him on a birthday, and he was pretty simple to put together in this card, so perhaps I'll experiment and try other colour combinations.

Shabby Chic

I am loving Easter weekend.
The weather hasn't been wonderful, but it's been heaps better than the previous 10 days so it is looking pretty good in comparison - sort of like when your son finally tidies his room and you tell him how wonderful he is - when he should have been keeping it tidy anyway.

I have been able to spend more time doing some card-making and looking at other peoples cards on blog challenges. Sometimes I just feel daunted by how creative people are, but then I decide to emulate rather than surrender ... it's worth it for the satisfaction of doing something different, and something you feel pleased with.

The Just Add Ink challenge this week is a sketch which looked fun and I could see lots of possibilities for it.

I was thinking that if I had time it would be interesting to make 6 different cards based on the sketch because sometimes I get almost catatonic with confusion because I have so many bits of ideas and want to make it the best it can be. 

As a result of which I have bits and pieces of 'worked' paper that, although nice in their own right, have not been turned into a card because I've not been sure where to take them. But I keep them all on the off chance that I'll find the rest of the inspiration one day.

Meanwhile, back to this sketch - I decided to do something I haven't tried before at attempted a shabby chic card. And I was quite happy with the result. And it all came from my stash.

I started with the script paper by using an Elizabethan-looking font and Shakespeare's Sonnet 116, Then tore it and inked it with distress inks. 

The dark card in the background is a really dark purple that I always have in my stash, The top panel is a piece of Basic Gray and the bottom is a piece of blue card that I embossed and inked about with until it looked more relaxed. The lace is from my sewing stash, the flower I made & then added the skeleton leaves, and some branches from a memory box die. I inked and lightly glittered the branches. 

My daughter thought it looked great and wants it for a friend's birthday next month, so I will pop a birthday sentiment on it then. 

I know there are some faults with it - but I'm not saying ... but on the whole I'm happy with it as a first attempt at shabby chic, so thank-you 'Just Add Ink' design team for giving me the inspiration to push out of my comfort zone a little.
